Collaborative Design Studio

Goal
Work together with members of other design majors (interior and digital) to successfully collaborate and produce a movie pitch based on an existing science fiction novel.
Pitch
20,000 Leagues Under the Dying Seas is the adaptation of the original book by Jules Verne. This takes place 100 years in the future, when climate change and pollution have resulted in the near-complete loss of all ocean life. The story follows Nemo IV and his crew as they travel in the Nautilus to find life in the ocean.

Story Context
Since the story is an adaptation, we have taken several aspects, like the characters, setting, Nautilus, and monster encounters, and modified them to fit our pitch. The map shows the current state of the world and where the group will be traveling, and what they will encounter.

Characters
The four main characters are: Nemo IV, Professor Aronnax, Conseil, and Nad. In the original book, Nad is a man, and the race of the characters is not specified.

Nautilus
The Nautilus is the main setting of the movie, as this is where the crew spends most of their time. The Nautilus is the original used by the original Captain Nemo a hundred years ago. Nemo IV discovers the Nautilus wrecked at the bottom of the ocean. He repairs it, fusing the old body with new pieces to make the ship a weapon to fight off anything in the ocean. The Nautilus is also equipped with sensors on the front half of it that send information to the control room.

Length: 70.7m (232ft) Beam: 7.9m - minus fins (26ft) Propulsion: 1 x Retrofitted Pressurised Water Reactor Top Speed: 25 knots (46.3kph/28.7mph) Producer: Unknown (Nemo?)

Mini Sub
The Mini Sub is the modern submarine that Nemo and the Professor take to explore the depths of the ocean. During this exploration, they discover the Nautilus, and with the minisub, they can repair the Nautilus and make it operational. The Mini Sub fits into the bottom half of the Nautilus for small two-person explorations.

Length: 3.81m (12.5ft) Beam: 3.0m - including fins (10ft) Propulsion: 10 x Bladeless Propellers Top Speed: 18 knots (33.3kph/20.7mph) Producer: Unknown (Nemo III?)

Diving Mask
The diving mask is equipped to see in the deep, dark depths of the ocean, and it mimics some of the sea life that existed in its form.

Knife
The knife is used by Nad and Captain Nemo throughout their adventures from fighting the monsters and preparing things around the submarine.

The Nautilus Rooms
Museum/Salon

“A museum in which an intelligent, if a spendthrift, hand had fathered an amazing medley of the best treasures of nature and art.”

Port Side “I noticed works of great value, the greater part of which I had admired in galleries of Europe… the old masters… a Virgin of Leonardo da Vinci, an Assumption of Murillo...and some admirable statues in marble and bronze…”

“A museum in which an intelligent, if a spendthrift, hand had fathered an amazing medley of the best treasures of nature and art.”
Where Captain Nemo keeps things he collects on his adventures.
Library

The library is where the crew goes to relax and research during the journey.
Dining Room

This is where the crew eats, and converses in a relaxed manner.
Control Room

The crew stays here during the journey to keep track of the course the submarine is taking, as well as read and see the information coming from the sensors.
Creatures
There are two main creatures: Lurkers and Daiouika. The Lurkers are a school of mutated fish that are scavenging for and have adapted to eat almost any material. These schooling creatures are extremely territorial, so when the Nautilus approaches, the submarine is attacked. The Daiouika is a Japanese drone that was created to clean up the debris and trash in the ocean; however robot goes rogue and becomes a giant entity in the ocean collecting metal and plastic. When the Nautilus encounters it, the Daiouika attacks since the submarine is mainly metal.

Merchandising
A toy set was created to go along with the release of the movie. The model kit includes all of the pieces to build your own Daiouika.

Movie Poster
A movie poster was designed as a part of the advertising, and it would be on display in theaters, billboards, and even buildings.
